want to hook a router/modem up to pc its wired, i want to do it through
ethernet port

do i need

crossover cable

or

straight through cable

to connect the router to my single desktop

Ordinary straight through, that's a standard connection.

A lot of routers nowadays can sense the type of cable and adjust
themselves automagically.

Or uplinking a hub that doesn't have an uplink port/switch or
autosensing.
