Hi folks

BT Broadband was fine till their router packed up so I brought a
Netgear. Although I can get this to connect 2.272mb/s I can't get to
any web sites. I can however connect to a neighbours wireless BB, (not
sure which isp they are on) and get web sites fine.

Is there something different about BT BB that I'm missing... like will
it only work with their router? Or their ghastly btyahoo software?

Any help much appreciated

Andy

BTBB will work with non-BT supplied routers, I have a linksys (cannot
remember model no) that works fine. Although I have heard anecdotal stories
of other ISPs routers being locked to that network. Would think this would
apply to an off-the-shelf model though.
Also do not have to use the BT Yaboo software, Its not on my PC since
rebuild and it works fine.

You may already have tried the following, but its a starter for 10.

Are you sure the router is working - all lights on etc?
Is there a firewall within the router - is it allowing any traffic?
Is the PC firewall allowing traffic to/from the router? Maybe had a fixed
IP address that has changed?

Did you put the BT login name and password into your new router?

It may show you a connection at 2.272 mb/s but that is simply the ADSL
connection to the exchange. To get internet connectivity you need to
provide a username and password to authenticate the connection.

Yes with the BT username and password it connects to bt internet have
checked firewalls etc and no probs there. I can't think of anything
else to try! Can't think why it should behave when connected to the
neibours wireless net???

What has the neighbours wireless network got to do with the Netgear
router you've bought ?

How are you actually connecting to the Netgear, is it via wireless or
ethernet ?

How are you administering the Netgear router settings ?

Have you made sure that VPI/VCI is 0/38 in the settings ?

Now you've said that is _does_ connect to bt internet using the BT
username/password, before you said it didn't.

What is the exact setup there ?

No, your router does not connect to the neighbour's wireless.

Please explain in detail what you have, and how all the components connect,
so we can understand your situation and try to help.

Sorry for not giving the exact connection details. Here goes:
The Netgear DG834 Router is connected to the PC via Ethernet and sets
up OK using the CD. Putting the username and password gives connection
to bt internet. However there is no web access. There is a usb
wireless dongle attached to the PC which allows connection to a
neighbours wireless network (with permission) this allows web access.
I don't know which isp the neighbour has but assume its not bt. The
main question is does bt internet require some different settings to
achieve web access to most other isps??

Step 1. Uninstall the BT software from your PC. You don't need it, and it
will only confuse you.

Step 2. Unplug the USB wireless dongle so you are not confused by the
neighbour's wireless

Step 3. Open a command windows and type:
ipconfig /all
- report here the IP addres, subnet mask, and default gateway shown.

If you are not confident about the next steps, stop here and wait for
further advice.

Step 4. Open your web browser at the default gateway address you just found.
This is the management page for the Netgear router. You will probably be
asked for a username and password - these are the credentials required to
manage the router, not the access details for the internet. The manual that
came with the router will tell you what they are.

Step 5. Review all the pages of information that the router shows. One
will show you the details of the ADSL login and password - these will be on
the letter you have from BT. If your previous work was successful these
should be in place correctly.

Another page will show you the state of the connection to the ADSL line.
Tell us what you find.

Step 6. In the command window, type:
ping www.bbc.co.uk
- and tell us what you see.

Thanks for your detailed reply

I have been through all the steps you suggest several times. The
settings in the router are correct and entering the username and
password connects me to bt broadband the router tells me I'm getting a
rock solid 2.272mb/s. So all is well with router, ethernet connection
and ADSL connection. BUT I still cant get a web page. I have made sure
the ip and dns are set to auto I have checked the connections in
Internet explorer are set to 'never dial a connection' and that the
LAN is set to 'automatically detect settings'.

As I have said before if I plug in the wireless dongle and connect to
the neighbours isp all is well, web pages AVG update etc???

Andy (frustrated and about to give up bt!)

you have failed to implement "Step 3. Open a command windows and type:

ipconfig /all
- report here the IP addres, subnet mask, and default gateway shown."
