Help with BT Basic

I'm looking for some help and advice for some friends who use BT
Broadband Basic. For the past week or so they have been unable to
connect, the green arrows in the system tray show an upward stream but
no downstream. They receive error 721 after the BT modem tries to connect.

They have spoken to the BT support guys who just ran through the same
things I tried myself, but still no connection.

The power and DSL lights are showing on the modem so I guess the
broadband signal is there?

As a broadband cable user myself I don't have a clue when it comes to
adsl, can anyone help?

Thanks.

Is the DSL light static, as it should be?

Have they plugged *anything* in to any of the phone sockets without a
filter?

DSL light is static, filters fitted to both phone sockets.

Can they access via bt_test_user@ (whatever the ISP's gateway is
called), no password is required.

If they can't then their virtual pathway is either incorrect or
corrupted & only the ISP can get something done about that. If they can
then the chances are there is something incorrect with the way that they
are inputing the login username, remember it could be case sensitive.

Oh & by the way, normally the network login user name is not the same as
the email adress so make sure that they know the differences..

Sounds very much like a call to the ISP's helpdesk, sorry but before you
try login in with

bt_test@startup_domain to see if there is any connectivity at all

With BT BB I thought the username was irrelevant - it goes by the
phone line to authenticate that much of it - unless I am in error

Does not matter what I use.

A Chinese friend of mine couldn't log in to BT broadband because when
he tried to, he spelt his name properly. It was only when he mis-spelt
it to conform with the BT version, that he could get through.
