Advice request please.

What's the best way for me to get BBand on at the same time on 2 adjacent
pc's, PC1 and PC2?

I have BB via BT on PC1 and can get it on PC2 by unplugging the modem from
PC1 and inserting in PC2.

Current set up...

PC1 - OS=XP Pro
Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem (Green frog)
Netgear ISA Network card (EA201)

PC2 - OS=XP Home
Abit NF7-S mobo on board net connection
and connected to PC1 via Netgear Ethernet hub (EN104)

Thanks.

Assuming you don't want to spend any money then you'll need to enable
internet connection sharing on PC1's broadband connection. This will allow
you to access broadband on PC 2 if you set PC2 up as a dhcp client.

This will only work as long as PC1 is turned on though.

Personally, I'd ditch the modem and hub and buy a dedicated ADSL
Modem/Router/Switch.
Then PC2 can then access the Internet without having to have PC1 turned on.
You also have the bonus of NAT firewalling (and depending on the router you
buy, perhaps more complex firewalling/networking facilities).

Thank you.

Not being to much up on home networking etc can you expand a bit on what you
mean by:-

.....enable internet connection sharing on PC1's broadband
connection..........

How do I do that?

>This will allow
>you to access broadband on PC 2 if you set PC2 up as a dhcp client....

and what is dhcp client?

If I went with existing setup is there any other disadvantage over the M/R/S
apart from firewall aspects?

Also any recommendations for good, stable, established dedicated ADSL
Modem/Router/Switch that should suit my set-up?

Thanks again.

As Grant suggests, the easiest way is to set up Internet Connection
sharing on PC1.
Personally, I would go for a modem and seperate router with at least 4
ethernet ports, then each pc can share the connection independantly
and it is also easier to add other pc's in the future if required.
This also makes any future troubleshooting easier, some ISP's don't
like you having a combo unit and will only support a modem, (I can'y
remember which ones before you ask). And upgrading\replacing
components will be cheaper too because you have the cost spread over
multiple boxes.

You don't say what operating systems you're using, but assuming
Windows98SE or later just set up Internet Connection Sharing on the one
with the modem, set the other one to get its IP address/DNS
server/default gateway automatically, and there you go.

Here goes:

On PC1:
Right click the "My Network Places" icon

Select properties

Right click the icon representing the dial-up connection for your adsl modem
and select properties

Go to the "Advanced tab" and select the tick box next to "allow other
network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection". Tick
the other two boxes below this as well.

On PC2:
Right click the "My Network Places" icon

Select properties

Right click the icon representing the Network Card and select properties

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click properties

Ensure obtain IP address automatically & obtain DNS server address
automatically are selected (this is what makes the PC a Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) client - PC1 is acting as a DHCP server once
ICS is enabled).

That should do it. If either PC asks you to reboot then do it.

Alternatively, you could have RTFM! Look up Internet Connection Sharing in
the Windows help file.

Fair point, but I think the days when ISPs only supported modems are long
gone. Just about everyone offers "wires only" these days. Although, John
does say that he is getting his broadband via BT - If anyone is going to put
a fly in the modem/router ointment it'll be BT!

If he were to stick with the modem and buy a router he'd be kind of limited
to the ones that accept a modem connection via usb. Getting these things to
talk to each other is just another embuggerance you don't need when you can
get a combo box to do the whole thing.

I'd buy an ethernet modem whilst I'm getting a router, cuts out all
that usb nonsense.

Windows XP Pro and XP Home
Many thanks for all the useful pointers - though I was getting there - one
time had the connection icon showing on task bar of PC2..but then had no
idea how to actually get on line.
Brain is starting to pain..will have another go tomorrow :-)
