No replies, guess I have baffled everyone with this one!

Today I tried another network card and lead in both PC and still getting
crashes.

It has now gone from crashing when I turn off second PC to crashing
everytime the network lead is plugged in whether my second PC is on or not!
So am absolutely stuck now.

Can some kind sole tell me how undo network setup/changes so I can maybe
start from scratch again or is XP Restore gonna sort that out?

Thanks

Graham

Well you've baffled me :-)

If you go to Control Panel | System | Hardware Tab | Device Manager you
can right click on a device and uninstall it. After that turn off, take
out the NIC and re-boot.

If you still get a network card showing then perhaps there's one on the
mobo you could use?

Hi Jeff ....again :-))

Yep there is an onboard Network and I tried that today to rule out any
conflict with the PCI one I bought by removing it and using the onboard, but
still got crashes.

At least when I first started all this it worked until I turned off the
second PC, all this is very very strange indeed.

Anyway will try and remove everything and start again.

Thanks again, as I said before, nothing has ever gone simply for when it
comes to computers :-(

Just uninstalled both cards and rebooted main PC, card reinstalled ok. I
then plugged in network lead from second PC and before I even put the mains
plug in for the second PC the main PC crashed to a blue screen and the
second PC wasn't even powered up, so how can that cause a crash???

Surely if the second PC is not even plugged into the mains the Network card
cannot have any power to it, so how would it have any effect or influence
over my main PC?

Could my yellow lead I bought be faulty? It is a Cat5 UTP Crossover cable,
I take it this is the correct lead to directly connect two PC's without
anything (hub switch etc) in the middle?

Jeff sorry to be a pain just one more question honest :-)

My second PC has XP but does not have SP2 installed and is also an upgrade
from ME so is still running on a FAT32 file system, unlike my main PC which
has SP2 and NTFS.
Clutching at straws here, but would this cause any problems?

If not do you think I should get a different cable?

Thanks

Graham

I can't see how the upgrade from ME or the lack of SP2 could cause
this, and the type of cable you have, Cat5 crossover is correct.
Putting a network cables in while a PC is running is not a good idea,
although I think you have tried it every which way :-(
Have you tried with the onboard network connection and a NIC in the
other PC?

Yep that is how I have it at the moment and if I boot up main PC with cables
connected it crashes when it gets to the desktop and starts looking for
connections.
