Hi,

I am trying to help an elderly gent to get his ADSL back.
It has ceased working and the error is "no dial tone".

His modem is a Speedtouch and it worked fine when first installed last
month, it (and his computer) works fine in my house on a different
exchange (he is on Ardrossan I am on Kilwinning). He phoned BT to ask
if the main socket (the modem is plugged in here) could be checked and
was told "no, it is all automated"?

Has anyone any idea what the fault is to help me get his ADSL back.
His telephone works fine if that helps any!

Thanks

Sorry, forgot to mention.
I have replaced filters at his home, with no change, the ADSL light on
the Speedtouch just blinks.

cheers

Sounds like he has a Speedtouch USB ADSL modem and the problem
is being reported not exactly correctly, due to it having to
emulate a dial-up modem. ( - "no dial tone" error) When tested
on your system, it is fine, because you are using a better
line or closer to the DSLAM (exchange)

His BT line may be more noisy or longer than yours and so the
modem is having to work harder to keep in synch. When it
drops out, it tells the emulation SW something that looks
like a normal modem problem, which is not exactly correct for
ADSL. As a starter. I suggest looking at his wiring and
making sure he doesn't have the ADSL signal going all over his
house e.g. using plug-in filters in every slave socket. Test
the modem in the test socket -behind- the master socket's
faceplate, using a BT to RJ11 converter as required (or a
(new) plug-in filter, since that is all it is doing for the
ADSL half of the signal - socket conversion) If this works,
replace his filter at the master socket with, for example,
http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php) and make sure
he has no house wiring connected to the BT wires.

I recommend that you get him to replace the USB modem with a
router. I've had success replacing BT supplied Speedtouch
"non-working" USB modems with the ZyXEL P660R <http://www.dsl-
warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=P660R> They are being replaced
by a different model, but this one still works fine - and on
on poor lines.

Thanks so much John :-)

I know he does not have full signal like I do, I think it's about 2-4mb
connection, I will recommend a router, and I can try mine first at his
home to check.

Many thanks for your help.

Make sure it's a router with a new ADSL chipset supporting
G992-5 (ADSL2+). These tend to be better than others at
handling bad lines, IME. I had a problem locally with a
SAR715 when they went from RADSL to MAX. I replaced it with a
ZyXEL P660R-61 and it initially synched at 8.128Mbps

I think you have actually hit the nail on the head p k

Try another router is always the best option.
Using a 'proper' modem/router is always far better than the USB thingy
anyway.

We keep an old one (actually a very good Vigor 2600 with spectrum
analysis and very full line information)handy for going around testing
with a laptop.

Mike

Fitted a Speedtouch ST-546v6 4-port Ethernet ADSL2+ router and it is
working fine again, thanks again for your help John :-)

No problem - I find it's a fix I try to do first to save my
time - I should have shares in routers :-) I often wonder why
USB modems are offered "free" - perhaps it's to boost support
revenue???

Did you should make sure all the junk software is off his
computer? The ISP's "support" software may keep trying to
call home. CDs included with mainstream ISP packages are
another source of problems.
