Having trouble with DNS...any suggestions?

I have several win98 boxes behind a DI-604 Router
connected to a cable modem. It's been working great until
last month. After getting the latest update for explorer,
one machine can't get DNS.
NOTE: I dual boot the machine and Linux still works
great...so the card/cable/DHCP/... still work fine.

When booting Win98, I can ping hard IP addys on the
internet, but DNS doesn't function at all (ping
www.microsoft.com fails). In the network panel, DNS is
disabled (as it is on all of the other machines on the
LAN).
I have re-installed windows from CD 2 times, removed
(disabled) the network card and removed the driver files
to make sure a clean reinstall is done, and even installed
a different network card (to make absolutely sure it
wasn't the original card's driver). In no cases does DNS
work.

I suspect the DLL for DNS lookups are broken on that
machine, but wouldn't that get fixed with a "clean"
install?

Hi,

First thing - trying to ping www.microsoft.com won't work - ICMP (ping) is
blocked. Test using www.yahoo.com instead.

What do you mean that DNS is disabled? Your Win98 clients need to point to a
DNS server to resolve host names. If you run winipcfg does it show a DNS
server IP address? If so can you ping that IP address?

Yeah, I was trying to be PC....
I was actually pinging www.google.com. It works from
my other PC on the LAN.

It is "normal" to mark DNS as "disabled" in control panel-
>network->tcp ip->DNS configuration with this kind of

setup. I was trying to be precise to those great few who
understand the secrets of windows... :-)
To add another data point, I have another PC on the LAN
that has the same settings but has no such DNS problems.
