Pro's and Con's for upgrading the firmware:
Pros:
* You get a decent firewall that will protect your machine(s)
* Some of the old bugs have been fixed, the router is a lot more stable
from my POV
* There are a few new buttons here and there to click and mess with
Cons:
* Some people have reported that you loose SNMP, the router won't feed back
SNMP information
* You loose telnet access to your router, presumably they did that to make
room for the firewall in the routers memory
* It is a beta firmware, we'll probably never see a release version from
ADSLTech/Origo
* If it goes wrong, you need to have the confidence to be able to perform a
DOS Flash of your router to get it working again. Involves taking it apart,
bla bla bla.
* Alternative: EBuyer or ADSLTech in London will replace the router for
you, but you'd be without it for a few days.
* Some people have reported bugs in the firewall, don't trust your life to
it just yet.
The general message is: If your router is working fine for you, and your not
confident with being able to "wing it" if things go wrong, don't upgrade
just yet.
It is possible to secure the router without having the upgrade.
Hmmmmmm.... I just upgraded mine because I like the satisfacition of
upgrading things (and because I'm going to Static IP's soon so I need the
firewall when I knock off NAT.)
