Hi,

I am connecting with Windows 98 SE via Ethernet on a
campus network. I go to the command prompt and I type
ipconfig

I have an IP, a gateway and a subnet mask. These are
correct, I used another students computer and the gateway
is exactly the same. I can ping my own computer, but
not the gateway and nothing else beyond the gateway.
So... it seems like my computer has an IP address but
will not work.. the adapter is installed correctly and
the TCP/IP protocol is also installed.. I'm not sure
where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

What do the status lights on the NIC tell you?

Did you get the IP address via DHCP, or enter it manually?

Are you sure you used the right kind of cable?

There is no activity for the activity light. The 100
light is green. The 10 is off. The IP address was
retrieved via DHCP. Could I get an IP address with the
wrong cable? What kind of cable should I be using? I
have a cat5 cable now.
