hate wireless..... sometimes

i have posted here many times in the past about the onboard intel 2200BG
wireless on my notebook only getting 1.0Mbps at university for their
wireless network

a friend of mine at uni who was sitting right by me with a belkin PCMCIA
card was getting 48Mbps

at home my intel 2200BG gets 54Mbps all day long all night long!!

so i figured i would get a Belkin PCMCIA card for university, i got it today
Belkin 54g PCMCIA notebook card

slotted it in on my home network (the network the internal intel card gets
54Mbps at home but only 1.0Mbps at uni)

anyway the belkin could only manage 11Mbps i figured that was weird so i
uninstalled drivers and tried instaling again

this time i got up to 24Mbps and it crept back down to 12Mbps, which is
better than the previous 11Mbps it was getting

I tried my friends belkin at uni a while back, it is exactly the same PCMCIA
card

it got me 48Mbps at uni, where my intel would only get me 1.0Mbps at uni,
sometimes the intel would slip off all together

but at home the intel gets me 54Mbps yet the belkin only gets me 11 - 24
Mbps so why is it that the belkin works better at uni and the intel works
better at home?

i am using a belkin desktop PCI card on my desktop PC at home on an ad-hoc
network

i just fail to see how i am getting conflicting resuts, one would think that
because the belkin out performs the intel at my uni then it would out
perform the intel in my home, but it doesnt the intel destroys the belkin at
my home network!!!

I have similar probs with connection speeds. I used to run a DG834G and
managed to keep 54mbps or 48mbps all the time. Due to changes in
circumstances, I now have a DLink DWL2000 as the wireless access point,
which is a 54mbps unit, but I can only get it to work at 12mbps most of the
time. It starts off at 54mbps, but *quickly* falls to 11-12mbps. I'd
really like to know why the speed wont hold up, as the units in question are
very close, and full 100 percent signal strength...

Anyway, that hasn't answered your query, so I`ll leave others to comment on
the possible reasons......

At home you are the only user and do not have to share your network with
anyone therefore you should get the max the system is capable of(I am
surprised you say 54Mbs as 22-24Mbs is more realistic).
At Uni there will be a number of users on the same network and you will
have to share the "Bandwidth",if there are 20 users trying to transfer
data at the same time then it is not surprising that you get 1Mbs.Are
you and your friend on the same "network" and "subnet" at Uni?

this is the thing, and i know its crazy, but the uni's entire ntwork isnt
sbnetted

so we must be on the same network
