Has York exchange reached capacity for ADSL?

Hi all,
Have a friend who has just been told by BT that he cannot have ADSL (despite
having said 2 times before that it has been activated!?).
I see the exchange has been LLU'd (if that's the terminology) by Bulldog and
Tiscali (urrrggh!).
Is that and ntl cable his only options?

According to the Plusnet exchange checker the status is green which means
there is capacity. Of course your friend's line may not supoort ADSL for
another reason.

Thanks for reply.

It's a pretty newly built estate of apartments on a brownfield near the city
centre.
I'd assume they'd ensure the telecoms into the place were sufficient for
them all to have ADSL.

Has he asked an ISP other than BT if he can get ADSL?

I'm wondering if fiber optics are involved. Some newly provisioned
estates fail at the checker due to BT having used a fiber solution to
provide telephone service.

They may well be able to work round it but the BT checkers could be
spitting it out by mistake. Another more reputable ISP could potentially
solve the problem by manually submitting the order.

not at all, the developer will ride off into the sunset and leave the
new residents relying on BT's universal service obligation to provide
them with a phone line.

There isn't a USO for broadband.

You've also got to remember, just because it's a new estate doesn't
mean that the network feeding the estate is going to be new, only the
last kilometre maybe new & i have known estates where only the last
100mtrs is new...

You are kidding right??!!! You think dealing with BT as a customer is bad,
you try being a builder and dealing with BT newsites!

A development with 1000 houses will get 200 E sides to start, there will be
dac's units in the cab, in the underground, in garages, inside cats, under
dogs....

The sheer incompitence does not stop at normal customer service, it extends
itself through the planning and network build departments too.

All that aside, there can be any number of reasons why the DSL is declined or
delayed. Not a BT line (that is signed over to someone else like the post office
or caudwell comms) No line plant, pair gain device on the line (dacs/wb900(!!)),
not fed from copper but on a TPON, lack of equipment in exchange or even order
not submitted correctly.

Most new estates are 'digital deserts' and getting a telephone line is a
challange to say the least. Good luck!

Broadband orders to WLR (or Calls*Access, if there are still any of
those around) lines can be processed by any supplier (unless, of course,
the owning company has an order line to block it... there wasn't one
last time I checked, though).

LLU, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish. If the house has
been inhabited previously, it could be worth calling Bulldog & Tiscali
to check whether the line is still nominally with them... although it
shouldn't be.

Capacity-wise, I'm on the Dringhouses exchange and have had no problems.
Not that it says much about the central York one, though.
