Used to be no access just in the evenings. If it's just binary that you
want, try Abasani or eternal-september; with the latter, worth using the
443 option as it's SSL and keeps going.

Yes but... the MX record for privacy.net is:

> privacy.net. 3600 IN MX 100 mail.privacy.net.

and the IP address of mail.privacy.net is:

> mail.privacy.net. 3600 IN A 10.23.42.11

which is not routable. What a shame!

Plusnet still has a working (text-only) news server and uses Giganews.

Pipex are now a crap ISP unlike ten or so years ago. Just move to a good
ISP.

In any event you can get inexpensive or even free newsgroup access from
various specialists who do the job better.

Demon doesn't do usenet with their home products.

I was using giganews, but it pissed me off that I was charged amost as
much for processing the monthly payment as I was for the base level text
only subscription.

Now I'm using gradwell for news, but I'm not impressed with that either.

Tempted to set inn up and peer off as many free text onlys as I can find.

Demon do do it on their Home Office product, the one that provides a
static IP address and web space. They don't provide it on their Home
product[0], which has a dynamic IP and no web space.

Maybe you could try Leafnode. It does a very good job here with the 5
different news servers I use.
