Hi,
I've been running Windows XP dial-up which dial's into a Shiva LAN Rover (16
modems) which in turn authenticates against an Internet Authentication
Service (RADIUS) running on a Windows 2003 Server.
I've never really looked into it much because it worked.
However, just starting to move to Windows Vista and I'm having problems.
The laptops I'm using are part of the domain using cached credentials.
Initially I found I can't get logged onto the network, it fails
authentication - I notice that they've dropped SPAP support from Vista, so I
guess that's the reason there.
Anyway, I can get dialled into the network if I change the Advanced Security
settings and set it to only use PAP. But then when I get dialled up and
connected if I try to use a network resource (i.e. simple go to a UNC
\\servername\sharename) after a delay windows will prompt me for a username
and password at which point I have to provide DOMAIN\username and the
correct password to get onto the network device.
However if I do the same thing with Windows XP i.e. use only PAP to get
connected, then I am not prompted to provide Domain details after my dial-up
connection is successful.
I guess it doesn't help that I'm using such old hardware (SHIVA LAN Rover),
but tbh they cost me about £50 and I get dial-in modems to my LAN. It's
cheap and it always worked until Vista

I have seen that if I use the
SHIVA inernal user database rather than Radius I do have the same problem.
I do have other access to the LAN (RSA/ISA web based, RSA/ISA VPN) but
dial-up is still needed in a lot of cases, especially on client sites where
we don't have decent internet access provided.
Any ideas why Windows XP works fine but Vista requires me to enter usernames
and passwords for every new network resource I try to access once dialled up
using PAP?
Are there any patches to add SPAP support back into DUN?
Are there any patches to make Vista DUN by compatible with XP DUN?
Any other pointers
Many thanks,
Alex
