I just tried using Red Hat 7.0.3. The set up ran with not problems
till i got to the nework setup. I got an exception error when i tried
to activate the card. The NIC is a 3com etherlink III , 3c509b.

the card passed all the tests ran by the 3com test program running
in MSDOS.

I remember the 3c509. It forgets it settings every so often. You have to
boot off your dos disk run the 3com setup program, set the address and irq
then save and boot into linux. I started setting up a box with slackware 3
years ago and every time I wanted to use it I had to setup the stupid 3com
card first. Tried a dozen of those and they all did the same.

i did that. the settings stayed in the card. i also had a network
running slackware with older 3com nics that had jumpers.
that was about 7 years ago. that worked out very well.
