hardwired Internet problem while wireless continues to work

I've got my Win XP machine connected directly to the MN500
via a cable and my Win ME machine linked via the wireless
adaptor. The MN500 is connected to my cable modem for
Internet access. Occasionally (like now), my broadband
networking utility icon in the system tray on the XP
machine will go all red and I can't connect to the
Internet on that machine. Meanwhile, the wireless link
from the Win ME machine works just fine and its icon stays
blue. Then, some hours or days later, I find the Win XP
machine has recovered its Internet link and the icon is no
longer red. Any ideas on what could be going on and what
I should check?

Have you tried a different cable?? That is the first thing that comes to
mind. I know this boxes had issues with port 1 at some point. Try a
different port on the router. When the access goes out, are the link lights
on the NIC and router lit up?
