Hi all,
I want to establish a wireless network-connection between me and my cousin
who lives down the street (about 30 yards). I've found lots of info on
Access Points, but can't find info on ranges (in feet/meters/whatever) of
these devices...
Can anyone point me to a usefull website or give me some advice on what I
wish to achieve????

Any help is appreciated!

WiFi depends on LOS (Line Of Sight), meaning nothing between the antenna
at each end of the link. With short distances, you can afford a simple
wall or two; at 30 yards you must be very careful or very lucky to get by
with the standard WiFi antennae.

If your houses are side-by-side, with no intervening trees or buildings,
and if you can park the WiFi antenna in each house near the (wood-only)
exterior wall facing the other house (preferably on the top floor of
each house), then you have a chance; else, plan on spending money for
amplifiers and/or hi-gain antennae.

Thanks for your reply, I don't want to spend serious amounts of money on
this little project, so I'll take a look around and see what this is gonna
cost me. It makes me wonder... since everyone is very enthousastic about
rolling out a network of WiFi access point all around the country. Isn't
this a very expensive undertaking? Having to buy such expensive equipment
and of course a very high speed broadband connection causes access fees to
rise sky-high. And maintaining all these seperate accesspoints seems quite a
job to me.

If I can put my two pennies-worth in here, it isn't. In fact you can
save money. I've just done some research (and costings) for a web-site
I'm putting together you might be interested in:

All costings are for the UK BTW. And all are based on one computer for
each household (simply add on £40 for each extra computer in a
household).

Cost of for one household with ADSL
broadband with one computer without
wireless networking (modem, setup,
plus annual ADSL subscription
£400

Cost of for one household with ADSL
broadband with 2 computers with
wireless networking (modem, setup,
plus annual ADSL subscription [1]
£550

Cost of for two households with ADSL
broadband access with one computer
each without wireless networking
(modem, setup, plus annual ADSL
subscription [1] £400 X 2
£800

(£400 each)

Cost of for two households with
shared ADSL broadband access with
one computer each with wireless
networking (modem/router etc, setup,
plus annual ADSL subscription [1]
£600

(£300 each)

Same as above but with 3 neighbours
£650

(£215 each)

[1] Shared Account. With more and more ISPs offering
1Mb bandwidth (and higher) Internet accounts these
"neighbourhood schemes" begin to have a certain
attraction.

I haven't (yet) done a "neighbourhood scheme", but I've relatively
recently put in a home wireless network (3 computers) with ADSL Internet
access and (providing you buy the right kit and keep it simple) it's so
very very easy. You don't even have to be a "computer expert" to do it.
Just one bit of kit for each computer that installs almost like "plug
and play".

I suspect that a majority of WAPs are in private houses and are used
almost exclusively by the occupants of those houses. As for the cost
of maintaining WiFi -- I spend more time and money replacing light
bulbs in my house.

That's an interesting piece of research.
But I still think building and maintaining a WiFi network that provides
access to, let's say, an entire street (15 houses, square) would cost more
than a home-based-wifi network.

Thanks for you reply!

That's the way networks should be - plug'em in and forget 'em.
Too much tinkering goes on IMHO. If it ain't broke then don't fix it :-)
