Anyone know if there is such a thing as a hardware email (pop3) checker. I
lot easier to check the mail than turn the pc on!. I'm thinking of a box
that plugs into a Ethernet router with maybe a LCD display to display
FROM/Subject ?

Hi Dave

I had the same thought, but settled on a bluetooth enabled pda and
bluetooth connection on pc,although you do need a pc on, so may as well
use it! you can of course get a bluetooth access point but im a
cheapskate!, small size, handy in the pocket and can check email
wirelessly when needed.

You could use an small plastic case from maplins tied to the router with
a bit of string, A PP3 battery connected to a red flashing LED and a
sticker on the front saying "You've got email, but it's probably spam"

You could probably buy one off eBay for £60.

I have a special POP account that we give to clients for urgent stuff.
That gets redirected to my Orange e-mail account which (when the wind
is in the right direction) sends an SMS alert which contains the
subject line.

I might finally see benefit in using a wireless router here.
