What is happening with 802.11a?

I am trying to determine which wireless standard to buy for home usage and I
have noticed that at least in one place (Tigerdirect.com) the prices of 11a
equipment have dropped dramatically (like 10x). Is 11a going away?

Given that dual band gear is beginning to appear, I'd say not. The 5 GHz
band has certain advantages, such as less interference and the smaller
coverage area may be desireable in certain circumstances. Also, if you're
running dual band, you may find that there some spots where one band is
dead, but the other works fine.

"Smaller coverage area" is answered by Transmit Power Control (TPC),
a draft standard, now present in Cisco's wireless equipment and being
adopted in other equipment (especially ones that include 802.11a).
