I've finally got my HAN (HalfAssedNetwork) up and running. I'm so
happy I have to brag.
Using ISDN (needed the extra phone lines, DSL isn't available here and
I will NOT give those idiots at Comcast any more money, so there you
go), a Eicon Diva terminal, 602software server software (set the ports
to a really weird number that nobodys' ever going to guess), 1 lan
card (3 com), an AT&T wireless access point and wireless cards on the
computers in the house and everyone is on the web. Throughput is
around 40-54 mbs (using g standard for all computers)on the network
and somewhere around 50 kbs speeds (42% compression) when everyone is
on the network screwing around on the internet. Using a WEP key
generator and MAC addresses for security. Set the wireless router to
only accept specific addresses. AND if that isn't enough, there's no
silly "My network places"; we use FTP with logins to transfer files.
Then, I downloaded one of those funky foil antenna plans from tech.tv
to direct the signal into the house (even in our driveway the signal
falls to 1 mbs or none) to keep any spoofers away. Can't believe it
works, but it does. I feel like McGyver.
Had a buddy on leave from the Air Force at the house tonite who does
IT - he just shook his head.
