I need to network one computer in 0.5 mile range. In the ranch, so its
mostly open air. What equipment should I use? Any idea? Thanks.

Timely question.... I'm doing the same thing. There's a tower by the main house
that is used for business band radio and TV. Am thinking a 8-12dBi Omni antenna
up there should work well. Will cover the main house, the foreman's house (about
500' away in one direction) and the new house (about 2000' in the other
direction). Both have line of sight to the tower.

Have purchased a Linksys WRT54G wireless router for the main house. 100' or less
of LM400 cable should reach the office in the main house.

Haven't decided on what to install at the two other locations. Seems that it
should be either another WRT54G router, or a WET54G Bridge. The bridge would
have to be hooked up to a simple switch to support multiple PCs. The WRT54G has
a switch built in, but it isn't obvious how to configure it for this type of
operation from the user manual. (The WAP11B 802.11B router manual talks about
this, so you would think the WRT54G should be able to.)

In any case, 5-12dBi directional antennas at both locations, pointed at the
tower should cover it.

By the way - take a look at the Linksys Wireless Camera:

It has some really interesting security implications...

Thanks for the help.
I found a product that answers all my questions.
http://dlink.com/products/?pid=36
ofcourse its redicilously expensive around $1100 dollars.

I am not professional enough to do the work like you planning to do. So.. I
guess I found what I was looking for..
Plus I will use sonicwall pcmcia card which day say its long range.. that
team should cover my need I guess..

I'm no professional in this area, but I think that exterior router should give
you OK coverage outside, as long as there aren't too many obstructions. You'll
need exterior grade Cat 5 wiring. Power over ethernet (POE) will work well for
that kind of installation.

I'd wonder what kind of penetration you will see inside buildings though, even
with the PCMCIA card you have selected. Rubber duckie antennas aren't the most
efficient. You may want to look into something with a bit higher gain.

BTW: The setup I described can be done for about $500 plus labor. You can also
do it in stages, starting with just the router, then adding the omni external
antenna, and then the other stuff.

If you are only trying to connect two computers over a half mile, the
equipment you are looking probably will work but is not in the running
for best solution. Use a smartBridge Total outdoor bridge at each end
and you're home free. Or for more flexibility use an smartBridge
airPoint outdoor at the source of the data with an omni antenna if you
need signal spread all around or a sectional if you need signal in only
one direction, put a smartBridge Total at the other end.
