Hey all,

A story has broken today that I've not heard before. Maybe I've got
my head in the sand, or maybe indeed this is the first thats been
heard, but basically GX Networks are rumoured to be posied to purchase
Pipex for about £60million.

(link to news item on uk-bug : http://snurl.com/2jpc - although it
really says no more than what is written above at the moment - will
update it soon when I get some more information)

Anyone heard anything about this ?

Yeah - I've read it all over the place now .. taking into account that
I did post this at around 5:30 in the morning - I suppose its
realistic to expect not many other sites to be upto date at that time

Yeah, I read that earlier. I guess I might be a bit concerned if I
were a Pipex customer. Let's face it who remembers what happened when
Demon were taken over by Thus? Some things got better, some got
worse.. ceratinly things ain't been the same since.

GX were a highly respected Business ISP. I worked for them when they got
taken over by Concentric (US) and then became XO. The parent company
decided to stop spending cash, restructure and dumped the European arm
(which was GX). I'm pretty sure that GX are still essentially the same
people who were originally GX of old.

I've never heard of them before though. How long ago was this?

I started working for them in July 2000 and they'd just changed their name
to Concentric (UK) before changing to XO and a colleague of mine had been
working there for the previous 5 years or so I think. They were pretty much
ISDN/Leased line business only outfit at first, but when I joined they were
also running Globalnet and Freenetname (along with other VISPs such as
Waitrose, David Bowie Net(!!!), Dialstart, and some others I can't
remember).

Incidentally, I believe that Teletext host their internet operations with GX
(at least, they did a while ago I believe).

A posting from 1999 about about GX (which was formed from Xara Networks)
