Is there any application that gives a picture
of what is going on with iptables -
I'm thinking of something that shows packets as particles
falling through the various chains?

This might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it might help (it
helped me when I was trying to figure out how to set up my firewall scripts).

Take a look at http://slackworld.berlios.de/04/images/IP_Tables.png
It is part of a larger article (on setting up firewalling scripts for
Slackware) at http://slackworld.berlios.de/04/essence-1.html
