Hi, I'm running Zone Alarm at home (until I get a router), and I'm
basically running exactly the same setup on my Fathers PC. 98SE Pentium
3 450, 256Mb of RAM. It crashes too often, which we have put this down
to Zone Alarm not being too hot on a 98SE system.

Can somebody recommend a good software alternative I can suggest he use
until I have time to sort him an Ethernet card, and a router?

Thanks, Alex.

PS Any opinions of the BT Voyager 210. He could use this on hiss USB
port until I can find the time to sort the Ethernet out....

Tiny Software's personal firewall product, which you might find still on
some archive web sites (and which allows remote access, so you could do
a check of what connections are established from his PC, and alter the
set of rules, again on *his* PC, if he needed assistance). There's also
the Kerio distribution - both are numbered 2.1.15 - which allows the set
of rules to be saved (in case of a reinstall, perhaps, or to crib the
rules from one PC to another). I feel sure I have copies of both,
and a PDF about Tiny's version, at least.

NB there is a limit to the number of rules which can be saved, and there
is the need for some 'learning' of your wishes, of course. I've never
used Zone Alarm so don't know how well these two compare, sorry, so
can only say to try it out... Peter Morgan.

I've not used ZA on 98SE - but I currently have it running on vanilla 98
systems and on XP, with no problems. Maybe your problem *isn't* ZA?

What makes you think that you won't need a software firewall once you've got
a router? They do different jobs, and *both* are necessary!

I have no problems running ZA (the free one) on a Win98SE box. If
it crashes a lot then you have some other problem I'd say.

Harry.

Two free alternatives I can think of - Kerio personal firewall and Sygate
personal firewall.

I have had no problems whatsoever with ZA on 98SE. As others have said look
elsewhere for your problem.

Seconded re Sygate but unfortunately now part of Symantec and from
their website

"Important Notice: Effective November 30th, 2005 all Sygate personal
firewall products will be discontinued. This does not affect Sygate's
Enterprise firewall and endpoint compliance products, which will still
be updated and supported."

No problems here either but I did hear a few moans about ZA problems in
later versions as the functionality increased, I picked a stable version
(2.6.362) and have stuck with it. It's still available for download here:

Don't think there was any implication of not needing a software firewall,
just wanting an alternative to ZA for use now, since a PC with software
that might crash while doing that task would make the PC vulnerable.
