Hmmm, that is pretty darned helpful, I am reading it now.
Hmmm, what is a "MIB"? They seem to think one already knows this by reading
the FAQ. This is a bit over my head. I just want the thing to get up and
running so that I can explore it a bit. I tried this go get me started:
snmpconf -g basic_setup
Whoa man, this is not self-explanitory at all, I backed out with ctl-c. Here
is what I found:
[root@ohmster root]# snmpconf -g basic_setup
The following installed configuration files were found:
1: /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
Would you like me to read them in? Their content will be merged with the
output files created by this session.
Valid answer examples: "all", "none","3","1,2,5"
Read in which (default = all):
....would one want to "read in" the original snmp.conf file as supplies by
redhat? Let's just say "none" for right now. (file /etc/snmp/snmp.conf backed
up to snmp.conf.orig)
Next question:
************************************************
*** Beginning basic system information setup ***
************************************************
Do you want to configure the information returned in the system MIB group
(contact info, etc)? (default = y):
Let's go default "y".
Configuring: syslocation
Description:
The [typically physical] location of the system.
Note that setting this value here means that when trying to
perform an snmp SET operation to the sysLocation.0 variable will make
the agent return the "notWritable" error code. IE, including
this token in the snmpd.conf file will disable write access to
the variable.
arguments: location_string
The location of the system:
Okay what does this mean? They want to know the physical locatioin of what,
the computer? Like "bedroom" or something? I don't know what I am doing, ctl-
c.
can you give me some pointers here, Mike?
Thanks.
