Hi,

Can someone recommend a good ADSL modem/router/switch?

Requirements:
- Reliable
- Works well with long line length to exchange
- 4 port switch
- Proper Firewall (i.e. port blocking in/out)
- Less than £60.

Don't need:
- Wireless
- VOIP

I've looked at the specs for the Netgear 834, Linksys AG241 and ZyXel
660H and these seem OK, but the reviews are mixed.

I don't think I can stretch to a Draytek or Cisco! I need one in a
hurry so ebay is out.

TIA, Mark

I've no experience of the specific models you mention, but I've always
found Linksys routers to be trouble free - My wireless Linksys is Cisco
branded as well.

They can come surprisingly fast with the 'Buy it now' option on ebay.

And are often contactable out of working hours.

There is a thread entitled "router recommendation invited from installers"
which discusses Linksys.
I certainly would never consider buying one, nor encourage anyone else to.

YMMV.

I have a draytek 2600+, one year old, 2 years left of manuf warranty,

It doesn't matter what it is, there's always someone who will rubbish
it, even if it's just because they want to be different. Most network
hardware these days is very reliable. I like Linksys hardware because
the build quality inspires confidence, almost everyone I know has one
and, unlike my previous Belkin, it hasn't broken down..

The trouble with ebay sellers is you take a chance. Many are good but
some not quite so good. I recently bought something described as
"excellent condition" but it was damaged (and not by the post). The
seller replaced it at his expense, but it took too long to sort out.
When I bid on the item the seller had 100% good feedback, but had
several negs by the time I placed my feedback.

*sigh*

I'm not rubbishing it because I want to be different, I am "rubbishing" it
because over the last couple of weeks, we have had over 10 Linksys wireless
access points go dead on us with jack shit support from Linksys; prior to
that, I have had plenty of experience because my work entailed it, both
commercially and privately.

1. I would not describe Linksys as reliable, I speak through experience.
YMMV.
2. I am not "rubbishing" Linksys to be different, I speak from experience.
YMMV.
3. Yes, most network hardware these days is reliable, my experience with
Linksys kit does not agree with that statement. YMMV.

FWIW, I use Draytek and Netgear kit at home, but at work, I utilise Buffalo
kit on a 900+ users network.

HATH.
