This was another - longer - thread on the same topic

Once things returned to normal, I asked if anyone from Google would tell us
what caused the problem and whether it might happen again.
Interesting reply from a Gmail Engineer this evening:
"The issue was caused by human error in the turn-up of a new datacenter. As
always, any time an issue like this occurs, we investigate the exact
sequence of events and come up with a list of action items to prevent
similar issues in the future.
There's actually multiple issues here besides the initial issue, since it
shouldn't have taken us as long as it did to resolve the issue.
I don't expect this is exact issue to happen again, but human error can be
pretty ingenious."
Good to know there is a human side to Google and they are willing to admit
when they made a hash of things.
