Hi,

Does anybody think it would be possible to open a web page automatically
(without installing any third-party app on the PC)

when a PCMCIA Wifi card detects a network and the user gives the
authorisation to access this network ?

We would like to do it for our visitors coming to our office ... (we will
loan the Wifi pcmcia card to the visitor)

Does anybody saw such a behaviour with some wifi card ?

Daniel

http://www.dnsredirector.com seems to be a lightweight way to do that
.... and block access to your competitors' web pages at the same time ;-)

Loaning a PCMCIA card means loading some drivers.
The card might accidentally stay in the laptop when the guest leaves.

A better solution is an external "wireless etherenet adapter", assuming
that the laptop has an ethernet port that they already use.
No drivers. A bit clunky, as it's external, but hard to forgetfully carry
out the door.

There are also USB adapters, for those PCs with no ethernet, but those
require drivers.

Make 'em pay a deposit to the value of the card.

Sure, I guess his solution is to offer no support, if it works, great,
if not - tough!

That runs contrary to what I thought the offer was, to visitors at his
business. I can't imagine a client coming in, you offer them a PCMCIA
card, and then want a credit card for a deposit.

Students in our training classes are invited to use their laptops to
the WAP in the training room. We don't offer any hardware, but a fair
number of them already have hardware.

Good point, so RFID tag them and fit antennas to detect the movement of
the card.
