Gigabit to several 10/100 switchs?

Hi,

Can anyone please help me, if I have a server with a gigabit card in it, and
this then connects to several 10/100 switchs that are daisy chained,
therefore limiting the network to 100meg, if I put in a gigabit switch
between
the server and the other 10/100 switches, then
ran cables from that to each of the10/100 switchs, would I get 100meg on
each switch or would it still be limited to 100meg for the whole network.

Anyone have any idea what im on about?

If you go
Server ----1g-----gigabit switch---100m----10/100 switches---100m-----Client
PCS

Then you can have 100meg to the server shared between all the client PCs on
each 10/100 switch.
If you have multiple 10/100 switches then they each have 100meg back to the
server through the gigabit switch.
The bottleneck only moves to the gigabit switch if you have more than ten
10/100 switches all saturating their link

You can also get 10/100 switches with a couple of gigabit uplink ports so
you have a full gigabit from your edge switch to share amongst the client
PCs

essential to get cat 6 cable for a gigabit link?

I take it, that it only has to be cat 6 between the server and the gigabit
switch, but from the gigabit switch to the 10/100 switches can be cat 5?

What rot. We've got a 88 metre 1000-Base-T link running just fine on
Cat5e - in fact, the 1000-Base-T standard only requires Cat5. You may
be getting confused with 1000-Base-TX (which no bugger uses anymore)
which specified Cat6 and was, as a result, hugely unpopular.

Really?
Are you sure about that , as our office building is wired with Cat5 and
Cat5e and gigabit behaves just fine.

Oh , and we are a networking company , so might have a clue on such matters.

Badly installed cat5 may cause problems especially on long runs but it's not
essential to use cat6
