Gigabit Query

Good afternoon,

I am wanting to upgrade my office network and am seeking some advice.

At present I have two PC's & one server all wired via 100mbps to a
small belkin wireless router.

I also have one laptop that when in a docking station hooks wired to
the router and when not operates wirelessly.

The files we use in our office are enormous. Image files from a
microscope. These files are about 100MB to 1.2GB in size - absolutely
enormous.

As a result the time to taken to move things is taking an age...

I would like to upgrade my wired network to gigabit (hardware &
wiring), I also want to attach a wireless access point and also have a
link out to the internet.

Can anyone advise aside from updated ethrnet cabling what would be best
from a hardware perspective. Specific models from people who know them
would be helpful too.

All the network cards on my hardware is 10/100/1000mbps compatible.

Many thanks

Andrew

Many thanks

Gigabit eh? HP's range of switches have been working quite well for me in
this regard. As for the wireless access point, Cisco Aironet 1200s seem to
work well.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".

You already have a wireless router. Why would you need a access point?
[router has one builtin]

Suggested solution is get a gigabit switch. Connect the pcs to it. Connect
it via crossover/uplink port to the wireless router. No other changes
required.

If you cables are cat5 [since you are running 100mb I would suspect this is
so] no other upgrade is required.

Do you have to copy the images to the workstations? Can you use terminal
server and view them that way?

100 MB is hardly "enormous" even for 100 Mbps.

If the network cards are already gigabit, and the wiring is CAT5, all
you need is to swap switches.

Joshua,

Many thanks, can you advise if I will get 1gb from server to desktop
and back to server via my new switch or will I only receive 100mb. My
thought is that the contention rate on the switch will apply in the
same way it does with my broadband (30 users sharing a connection
reduces my speed)

Therefore would I be best setting my network cards to 100mb rather than
1gb

The crossover / uplink..? I presume this is simply an ethernet cable
from one port on the switch to my old wireless router
