I am trying to connect to a linux machine named ted from a linux machine
named joe. I am using auto dhcp. when I try to connect to ted with gftp I
get the message name not known. I can use the bookmarks and connect to the
internet sites ok with gftp. I have tried using manual ip etc. In the host
name i am entering ftp.ted. I entered a user name in ted with a password. I
am using that name in the user block. I can connect to window machines using
smb ok. I am using fedora core on both machine with everything selected.

You should probably enter 'ted' in host field.

You should probably enter 'ted' in the host field.

Are you sure there's an ftp server running on 'ted' and that the
username you're using has been allowed ftp access?

Just some ideas... You did verify that 'ping ted', brings an answer from
this computer, right? And 'ted' is indeed defined in /etc/hosts ? When
you say "manual IP" it is the "manual IP" of "ted" or maybe some other
"manual IP" that do responds to gftp?

The problem is probably that "joe" doesn't know who "ted" is. In a normal
internet connection, a machine's name is looked up on a DNS server to give
the correct IP address.

Joe and ted are obviously not going to be listed on a DNS server, so your
only option is to tell joe what ted's address is. That is generally done
by editing the hosts file; it is usually in the /etc directory. You will
have a problem, though, if DHCP gives a different IP address from time to
time.

I don't quite follow. If the machine you are trying to contact
is named "ted", why did you put "ftp.ted" as the host name?

Did it actually connec to ftp.ted before failing? Or more generally,
what name did it not find; what is the exact text of the message?
Specifically, is the message

Cannot look up hostname ftp.ted: Name or service not known

or something else? Is there some reason you can't post an actual
transcript from the message log, or a pointer to screen captures, or whatever?

( mind you: not "post screen captures"; post POINTERS TO screen captures )

So: most probable is, ftp.ted isn't the name of anything.
The name might be "ted", or since you are assigning IPs by dhcp,
you may need to use the actual IP of this "ted" dohickey.

I used ftp.ted in the host name block because the bookmark sites showed
ftp. and then the site name. I also used manual ip numbers. I have a cable
modem, router, and a switch box with 3 xp machines and 2 linux machines.
would I still need to edit the host file? I am able to get on the internet
and read files and copy from the xp machines.I am going to make sure I have
ftp installed on the machine I am trying to reach with ftp.I sure do like
linux, I can also go to my web site on cox cable and download my files from
cox to the linux machines.
