I am having trouble with a new repeater. I have a Netgear WGR614v2 router
and an Avartec 3150 notebook computer with some built-in wireless card
running Windows XP. To get a stronger signal downstairs, I added a D-Link
DWL-800AP+ in repeater mode. Although I was worried that I would be unable
to get the D-Link to repeat the Netgear signal, things configured properly,
and I was able to get it repeating.
When the devices are connected through an ethernet cable, you can monitor
the wireless repetition, and there are basically zero lost packets.
When I go to connect, the Avartec will pick up one of the signals, briefly
drop, and then pick up either the other signal or the same one. I do not
think there is a way for XP to diferentiate between two different MAC
addresses; rather it is simply grabbing a signal from the SSID "network",
which is the only SSID (since the D-Link is repeating).
I have a wireless LAN utility called WLAN PRISM that is running, and that
utility is where I can see the two MAC addresses of the devices switching on
and off, with the repeater being about 90%, and the Netgear router at around
20%. You can then see it "Associating" (ie searching).
Any suggestions here?
