Getting ME to see network printer

I'm adding an ME machine to a small lan. An OKIDATA printer
sits directly on the network. How do I get the machine to
see it and print to it.

The drivers are installed, as is the other software that
came with the printer. I know the printer's net address,
but see no way to enter it. I've tried every combination of
the "add printer" dialogues to no avail. What am I missing?

Thanks,
ed

You're missing a utility to allow WindowsMe to print directly to a TCP/IP
port, as it doesn't come with one. If the network device is a HP device,
you can download the software you need from their Web site. If not, search
google.com or download.com or a similar site for the software you need.

It is an OKIDATA 16N printer. I've searched the paper
manual, the online help, and about 10 books in two
Border's. None mention this.

There are 3 disks besides the driver disk. Would it be
there? If not, what should I search for?

Thanks!
Ed

Is the printer plugged into a computer or plugged directly into the
switch/router/hub? If the latter, you'll need to contact OkiData technical
support. No books at any book store will cover the process OkiData uniquely
uses.

It's the latter. So why do they make this so hard? And why
does the manual not say what to do or who to call?

Are all network printers this hard?

OKIdata isnt answering the email.

I don't know if Okidata includes a TCP/IP printing utility or not. If not
you should be able to find one or more at the web addresses I cited earlier.

Technically, a printer isn't what it seems. WinME's definition of a printer
is not the device itself, but rather, the printer queue at a server. The
OKIData tcp/ip "printer" is referred to as a print device. If no server is
reponsible for that device's queue and no utility is being run on the
network to provide the interface, the WinME system can't print directly to a
tcp/ip print device.
