Getting to the internet from a WiFi Hot Spot

I have a laptop with a GigaFast .11b Wifi adapter. My DeskTop has a
Cable modem and a D-Link 514 wireless router/access point box. Both
computers are running Windows 98SE

I have a good wireless connection between the laptop and the desktop.

However, when I visit a WiFi hot spot I get an indication of a good
connection with good line strength and line quality, but when I try to
go to web site I get a "Cannot resolve DNS" message and the attempt
times out.

Can someone please give me some hints as to what to look for to
resolve this problem. On one try I did connect to the web but shortly
afterwards I had a minor crash and have not been able to get it
functioning again after I restored everything.

When I go to control panel, network, TCP/IP USB adapter, properties, I
see the following settings:

IP Address = Obatain an IP address automatically
WINS configuration = Use DHCP for WIns Resolution
Gateway = 255.255.255.255 and 193.168.1.1
DNS configuration :
Host= Carlos
Domain is blank, I don;t know what to enter here. The name (SSID)
of the hot spot I am contacting is "riverside" should I enter
"riverside" here?
DNS Server search = 255.255.255.1 and 67.23.64.0
NetBios = The "I want to enable NetBios over TCP/IP" is checked but
greyed out
Advanced = Property= Allow Binding to ATM Value= No
Bindings= Client for Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing
for Microsoft Networks

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. While I have been computer
literate since the days of the XT, networking is all new to me.

Help Wanted

Charles

Responding to my own message there is something I left out. When I am
at home I can access the net via the broad band cable modem attached
to the desktop via the laptop. No problem in that area.
