I have a shared printer. The printer is attached to a Win98SE PC. It
has 2 clients. One client is an XP Pro system, and it connects and
prints to it without error to the shared printer. The other client is
a Win98SE system. It used to print to this printer. The host PC
recently had it's name changed. I had to reinstall the printer on the
XP box to get it to work as the UNC had changed, but it worked AOK.
However when I tried it on the Win98SE box I got the following
message:

there was an error writing to \\sharedprinter\HP for printer {HP
LaserJet 1000}: The network resource type is not correct.

The printer will be set to work offline.......

I have removed the printer several times. I have updated the printer
drivers, I have removed/reinstalled/updated the drivers and nic card.
I have tried connecting to it via its static IP, and via network
neighborhood, and add a network printer/browse for it, etc. Can't get
rid of error, MS Knowledge base is no help. Google seems to be no
help.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. TIA

try using a UNC that does not contain more than 8 characters

Thanks for the suggestion, but this UNC has only 4 letters. I just
used a dummy one for the public posting.

Thanks again for the help.

just a thought ...so you can "see" it on the network and connect to it ,but
it gives the error when trying to print 98<>98 ...
"error 66: The network resource type is not correct"

do you have any kind of firewall running?

can you connect using "net use lpt1:\\your\printer /persistant:yes" ?

Haggis,

I had not tried the net use command method as this printer is not used
with any DOS programs, however, by using it I was able to get it to
work. Just a side note on the particular error I was getting, there
was no error code give with it such as the "error 66" you referenced
in you last message. The error given is exactly as I had shown in my
first message. When I was researching solution, ALL the references I
found showed the error 66 or other error codes with the "network
resource type....." But my error did not. None the less your
suggestion to use "net use" saved the day !!!!

Thanks again !!!!
