Getting faster broadband

Right, so Sky is up and running and my stats were as follows:

ADSL Link
=========

Downstream
----------
Connection Speed - 4064 kbps
Line Attenuation - 37.0 db
Noise Margin - 6.9 db

Upstream
--------
Connection Speed - 544 kbps
Line Attenuation - 31.5 db
Noise Margin - 7.0 db

The speed seemed poor to me given the Line Attenuation and Noise Margin
so I tried it in the master socket. This doubled my speed instantly and
after some investigation discovered some bright spark (looks innocent)
put a carpet tack into the extension cable..... It's amazing the
connection had worked at all!

Now, I've relocated my router to another extension and my new stats are
as follows:

ADSL Link
=========

Downstream
----------
Connection Speed - 8096 kbps
Line Attenuation - 23.0 db
Noise Margin - 11.4 db

Upstream
--------
Connection Speed - 736 kbps
Line Attenuation - 15.5 db
Noise Margin - 7.0 db

Now we're talking! Perhaps I'm getting greedy, however 8Mbps still seems
slow for those line stats. Sure I've just doubled my speed but can I go
faster? Will the connection get faster automatically? Or am I just being
too optimistic?

Well, it would do !

Has the message still not yet got through ? The master socket is always the one
that's going to be capable of best performance.

Someone was tired when they replied to this! Of course I understand it,
I was merely describing what happened in the process of me improving
my connection.

Did you actually read the rest of my post? I managed to find a fault on
my internal wiring, the router is not on the master socket now but a
different extension. I'm still getting the line stats listed, but my
speed still seems slow considering I have very good Attenuation and
noise margin.

Which package are you subscribed to?
It looks like you are on a BT supplied 8M line or a Sky mid line..
Have Sky put their kit in your exchange yet?
samknows will tell you.

Check out some of the links over at skyuser.co.uk - I think you need
to submit a support enquiry, and they change the line profile for your
connection from there. ISTR they started to make a small charge for
changing the profile from ADSL to ADSL2.

The initial setting is based on your what they think your existing
line stats can cope with I believe, so sorting out the problem with
the internal wiring should make it worthwhile paying the fee.

I get the impression that ADSL2 can be a little more of an unknown as
far as connections are concerned, so they go for the "safe" option
when they're not sure if the risk of a bad ADSL2 line is justified.

(you are on the Max package aren't you ?)

Yes, I had an e-mail from Sky telling me that my exchange had been
upgraded and samknows confirms this. I've subscribed to the Sky Max
package and my Sky profile also confirms this.

Yes I am on Sky Max, well that's what I'm paying for at least! I have
been posting on skyuser as well and I've had a reply to my detailed
router stats. I have been told that my router is reporting "Mode: G.DMT"
which is 8Mb maximum. Like you he recommended I call Sky and ask them to
remove the cap as I have no errors on the line and should be capable of
much faster speeds.

You can see the full thread and my detailed router stats here:
