I am trying to install an SMC 10/100 network card and it needs to acces a vxd
cab file from the Win 98 disc for some reason, I still have the Win 98 book
and key code but the disc is nowhere to be found is there anywhere you can
download the files ? seems crazy to me that you need the old disc to install
a new card. I'm trying to help out my local chapter of Habitat for Humanity
with an old donated computer.
Thanks
Jay

You can probably get the driver directly from SMC. Have the model number
handy.

The VXD file might already be installed. Tell Win 98 to look for it
in c:\windows\system.

If it isn't there, search the hard disk for files named "*.cab". If
they're found, tell Win 98 to look in the folder that contains them.

I tried that and all they have is the same stuff you get on the disc that
come with the card and you still need your Win 98 disc.
Thanks anyway

Sounds like it needs some system files in addition to manufacturer specific
drivers. Windows installs several cab files during normal installation and
Windows 98 doesn't do a very good job at finding them during installations.
As the other poster pointed out, search for files ending in .cab and point
the installation there - it might work. Otherwise, if you can determine the
name of the system files it is requesting, we might be able to find/send
them.
