Sorry dog run accross keyboard, ill carry on :-

Broadband is due to be switched on in my Village Tiptree on Wednesday,
according to BT is states that we will be able to have upto a 2 M/bit
connection, my query is, why are companies offering 1Mbit connection but
wont start til October, does this mean in affect, I would only be limited to
a 500 connection for the time being. I was looking at the PIPEX 1Mbit deal
and comparting to F2S, but both dont seem to offer immediate connection but
seem happy to take an order, the FAQ does not help much either.

Thanks in advance

andy

Hi,
the current 2Mb connections are on the business service, and at the 20:1
contention ratio. Although these connections are available, they are
significantly more expensive than the 50:1 service. The 1Mb service that
comes out in October is at the 50:1 contention ratio, and aimed at home
users. It will therfore be quite a lot cheaper.

Oct 6th is when BT release IPstream 1Mb to the ISPs for trial.
Until that point you can only get 500.
Your options are:-
1. Sign up now for 500 and upgrade later.
2. Wait until the 1MB product (trial) goes live in October and sign up
straight to that.
3. Sign up now (with Pipex anyway) for the 1MB and sit on your thumbs
until it goes live. This is the same as 2. above really.

Thanks to you both, I now have a slighlty better understanding, do you
mention option 3 because Pipex have limited the offer of 1Mbit connection, I
take it you still have to pay for it even though you dont have it, but then
again the 6th is only a matter of days. You reccomend Pipex above all others
?

cheers

andy

The limited offer thing appears to be a bit of a red herring. They have
no intention of upping the price unless BTW up the wholesale price. You
won't pay anything until you become activated and this applies to all
the options.
ATM Pipex are the cheapest of the ISPs with a good track record.

I have been quite happy with Pipex for the last 18 months on ADSL. They
have their problems, as do most ISPs.

To get an idea of user feelings for a particular ISP look at the forums
on ADSLguide.

Personally I have a router (Argos special). it makes it easier with the
small network that I have because it takes away the reliance of having
to have a PC on to access the web.

My concern for you would be that I would wonder whether a village had its
own exchange - if not, what kind of distance you would be from the exchange.
