Gaim can't connect

Hi,

I use CentOS 4.0 and I wanted to use Gaim to be able to chat to friends.
When I try to connect to the MSN server is says: Unable to connect. It does take a long time so I'm guessing it times out.
For Yahoo it says the same.

I also tried kmess, it returns a different message: Connection timed out, there may be a problem with the servers.
But I'm guessing it's the same problem.

As I have a dual boot with windows, I tried starting MSN messenger under windows. This works fine.

Are there some settings I have to change in Linux to be able to connect?
I've googled for 2 days now and I can't find anything when gaim doesn't even want to connect.

Hope someone can help,
VT

Is your firewall perhaps blocking it?

Yes, me. Gaim can't connect because Microwank have changed their server,
partly in an attempt to boot off 3rd-party clients. You'll find that the
latest version of Gaim will connect. I downloaded 1.3.0 from Packman and
everything is good. The latest version of amsn is also fine. Latest
version of Kopete (0.1.0 which is bundled with KDE 3.4) is NOT fine. You
can make a server-side connection to MSN via the Jabber network (start a
Jabber account, right click on "services" from the Jabber Lightbulb in
the bottom right of the main Kopete window, add the MSN option...) but
that's not ideal.

.... you might not be running the current version.

The various IC folks (Yahoo, MSN, etc) are always changing their
protocols to keep the 3rd party/open source clients off guard. The
first thing is to try the latest version of gaim as they are always
doing their best to play catchup. If that doesn't work, compile gaim
from source. This second solution worked for me with hard-to-connect
Yahoo.

Or (b), encourage your friends to migrate to the AOL service (AIM), they
don't appear to behave in the same annoying way, given that I don't think
I've ever had Gaim fail to connect due to a protocol change.

Well, I don't think so, since I can use MSN messenger if I boot under Windows.

Thanks, but I downloaded Gaim 1.3.0 and it doesn't connect. Gives the same error as the older version.

Thanks for all your answers.
I am using Gaim 1.3.0.
My last option is to compile from source. I'll try that.
Unfortunately, friends migrating is nog an option.
