You were lucky. The GS speed test was about 5% of what dslreports.com and
speedtest.net gave me.
Just what do they hope to achieve when their figures will just be thrown
away as garbage.

To be honest Dennis it was the first time I had watched the show and
I only watched it to see the bit regarding Internet speeds and I was
not very impressed with any of it or its presenters .

Think yourself lucky, I got 86kbps download and 344kbps upload on a Virgin
Media 8MB connection!

I know speed tests aren't necessarily accurate, but you can tell when a
service it crap, especially when you compare the same tests with other
ISP's.

Gadget Show speed test is here if anyone's interested:

Well, other sites and computer journalists have questioned the validity of a
great many on-line speed test services, so I would be so sure that the one
on their site is wrong. Did you test with the other speed testers at the
same time?

The best way to test your download speed (so I've read) is to stick a file
say 10mb in a folder on your webspace (as offered by the ISP you're getting
your broadband from) then download it, the download pop-up box will then say
something like 10mb downloaded at 9.98mbps - which is only dreaming of
course! :-)
