G-mode only with WAP54G and WPC54G

Is there any trick to getting a WPC54G (under W2K) to work with a WAP54G in
G-mode only? I tried by changing the mode on the WAP54G from mixed to g-mode
and promptly lost access to the WAP. I tried restarting the notebook to no
avail. There doesn't appear to be any WPC54G settings in the profile for the
mode. I looked in the device manager and did see a mode setting. The WPC54G
documentation hints that the mode only needs to be set if running in ad-hoc.

Any help would be appreciated.

No trick. Both my laptops are set to G-mode only (as is the WAP).
However, I found that with WEP enabled, I needed to have static IP
addresses on the laptops ...
