I'm currently setting up my Linksys WRT54G (80 quid or so from
http://www.ebuyer.com/) with the aid of Jim Buzbees linux distribution
for it, to monitor my network, and do the appropriate thing if machines go
down.

After reading http://seattlewireless.net/wrt54g/ I realised that a router
running linux that could be played with is a really handy thing.

http://software.freshmeat.net/projects/wrt54g/

It's got 16Mb of flash, 16M of RAM, 4 10/100M ethernet ports, 1 WAN port,
and no serial port (as supplied, one can be added with a soldering iron,
which I'm doing to connect a modem for backup if the ADSL dies),
but may be handy as an always-on machine that can run scripts on your
network to schedule stuff and react to network events.

At the moment, the kernel cannot be changed, as linksys has not yet released
full source for it.

What would be really nice would be if they did a version which could take
a USB ADSL modem, so you could plug in a hub, but it's quite handy anyway.
