I think the north west trumps it..Manchester or somewhere

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/anomacts/

is rather fun..

Hot spots are Snowdonia, Lake district and bits of Scotland,. but
overall the West of Scotland is the dullest darkest rainiest shit-hole
on the whole island

But Cornwall is still bloody wet.:-)

Hi Mark,

I asked Xilo about monthly contracts and they said no one offers a monthly
contracts with FTTC - at the moment... I just thought they did

No wires only with FTTC either, but will of course change over time as it
did with ADSL ... I see Draytek and Fritzbox now making FTTC routers..

They may be the larger type but even 288 is far too few IMHO. I'd
better apply very quickly as soon as it goes active!

AFAIK most companies insist on 12-18 months minimum. I believe they
absorb some of the installation costs so it's reasonable to do this.

AFAIK you need a new socket in the house for FTTC but others here
probably know more about this than me. I'll report back here if/when
I get FTTC ;-)

Ok then you that have had FTTC for a while unless the take up is very small
then these original boxes will now need additional capacity how is that
achieved?
Another box at the side of the first one or more boxes nearer to the houses?
EG. in the estate roads rather than on main roads.

I don't know but I would guess that, owing to the high cost of
installation, when they run out of capacity then it will be tough on
those who can't get it. I doubt they would install more capacity if
their estimates are wrong.

I don't know how they estimate the take-up rate. However, given that
there is no cable here, we are a long way from the exchange and that
it's a fairly wealthy area, the take-up here might be a lot higher
than average.

It was on the daytime Angela Ripon consumer program this week about slow BB
and showed Robin Hoods Bay, Yorkshire people set up their own system they
found they had people amongst them with the technical knowledge too.

It doesn't actually take much technical knowledge, and that can be hired..

I stuck the internet into the channel islands almost single handed after
boning up on the drearier aspects of BGP...

And with excellent backup from Guernsey Telecom on the fibre stuff.
Jersey Telecom were less co operative. It was their failure to do it
that caused my involvement.....

At that time it cost a bit over £250k for two 2Mbps links and a proper
failover system. Much of that spent on people time and training and
documentation.

It ain't actually rocket science - heck if BT openreach can do it..

What mostly scuppers these plans is when the village realises its going
to cost £50 a month for a shared 2Mbps service or whatever, and says
'but broadband should be a tenner a month, for 20Mbps and unlimited
usage, max' .
