FTP Upload errors - command not understood

I've been getting this error all afternoon from both of my ISPs FTP sites.

It happens most when uploading in which case the error is related to 500
STOR: command not understood

It also happens when deleting - all I can see is 500 ST: command not
understood

The last time I had something like this it was because my cable modem had an
incorrect MRU or MSP setting or something like that. I can not even find
that setting on the new modem.

Ideas?
