Hi,

I have a desktop and a laptop which will not upload by ftp in last month or
so - tried Dreamweaver, Windows and via DOS.

I thought it might be my ISP since I can ftp when on other networks of a
similar nature.

After my ISP promissed they did not block any traffic, I tried doing it
diectly at the server (2003) and I found that I could ftp.

My server provides DNS for the workstations (setings via DHCP) but not proxy
services - they are connected directly to a network with router.

Interestingly, the laptop will ftp when at work, on a system which is almost
identical, except that it does not belong to the work domain.

I'm really puzzled, and it's doing my head in working on websites!!!

Any help / ideas appreciated.

Cheers,

NEIL

did you try passive mode in your ftp client? some networks need it on,
some need it off.

Hi Tim,

Tried it both ways.

No difference.

Hi Tim,

Whichever method I use, I get a server timeout error.

If I use a DOS shell, I can see that I can login to the ftp, can download
stuff, see the directory and all, but if I try to put anything, there's a
horrible wait, then a server (presumably the ftp server) timeout.

sounds to me like a permissions problem on the server. but if you can
login from the same laptop with the same FTP credentials on another
network, then i guess it must be a problem on the client side. if
you're running any firewall stuff i would suggest turning it all off
temporarily just to see if it is causing the problem.
sorry i can't be of more help
tim

Hi Tim,

Logic would say that my router is blocking this, but that doesn't explain
why I can ftp from my server.

Following on from that, the only conclusion left is that my server is
blocking the ftp - and the only way I can think of is because it's the DNS
server. But even that doesn't seem terribly likely.

Even more ironic is that it ocurred progressivly - it was fine, then
infrequent failure then total failure. SOunds like hardware fault. BUT I can
still ftp from my laptop when on other systems.

Gosh this isreally crazy!!!

ANYWAY, thanks for your inputs.

Do you have a linksys switch up front providing nat?
I had an issue with ftp disconnects too from XP machines. Unfortunately
can't remember the exact details but found a fix by googlising, seem to
recall it had something to do with the linksys switc and nat, there was also
a documented change to the server that would help. Also changing the ftp
client from pasv to port might fix it

Sorry to be so vague
