How can I extend the default FTP idle duration on Linux.
Have Slack 8.0.

It's a configuration element of the ftp daemon, not of Linux.

For ProFTPd, for instance, there are several timeouts of interest for use in /etc/proftpd.conf :

TimeoutLogin 120
TimeoutIdle 600
TimeoutNoTransfer 900
TimeoutStalled 3600
