I just installed a server 2003 enterprice x64 edition OS on a computer with
2 NICs (one for internet, one for local network). I ran the RRAS setp
wizard to allow sharing of the internet connection to all other computers on
the LAN side. Everything seems to be working fine, exceot for one thing.
FTP. If i connect to an ftp site from the server, it works great. If i use
one of the other LAN computers though, I cant connect. This issue seems to
be identical to one posted about a month ago by "graham webber", but i didnt
ever see a resolution for his problem either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

FYI, i have no firewall that I know of on either the clients or the server
(I turned off the basic firewall from RRAS), and there are no filters set in
RRAS that I can see. all web browsing, IM, newsgrowups, email, etc can get
to the internet fine through RRAS just not FTP.

Thanks for any info!

-Chris

If i try to login to an ftp site from the command prompt, i get the
following:

Z:\>ftp ftp.microsoft.com
Connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
220 Microsoft FTP Service
User (ftp.microsoft.comnone)): anonymous
Connection closed by remote host.

I am not talking about an error running FTP on my server, just connecting to
external ftp sites through RRAS.

Have any of you come up with ANYTHING? I have the same issue. I have
a w2k3 sp1 behind an RRAS box, and I cannot get either browser or cmd
line to work. No other firewalls, removed internet security, tried
everything possible including using 3rd party ftp client, with no
results.

I would call this a known issue, with all the folks I have seen having
the same problem.

Thanks for any help you can provide. Rod

Same for me. I tried all suggestions, but there was no help.

Now WS-FTP is installed on the Server, which works fine, but thats no
conclusion for the clients..

I'm having the same issue. I have a Win 2003 server and XP Pr
stations. If I open either an IE window to FTP or a DOS command line
I get "Connection closed by remote host." If I try the same thing fro
the server, it works great. Thoughts???

Thanks!

I can't see the original post, so I don't know what issue you are referring
to. However from what you posted, I am assuming you are using a browser or
CMD line from the XP Pro workstaion. I am also assuming the "server" in your
post is the FTP server and not just another server sitting elsewhere on the
network.

If this is the case, I would look at XP Pro's Windows firewall, or if the
Windows 2003 server has it;s firewall enabled, and if not, I would look at
IIS's FTP site properties for IP restrictions under the Dir Security tab.

I am assuming you can ping the ftp server by name from the command prompt on
the workstation.

Ace,

No, regretfully, my 2003 server is not the FTP server. We are
satellite office. Our primary office across the internet has the FT
server. We have XP Pro stations and a Windows 2003 server as a Primar
Domain Controller that is also our internet connection through a 56k DS
connection. If I ftp either through DOS or Explorer from the Server t
the home office FTP server, it works great. If I FTP from any statio
through DOS or Explorer, it fails/disconnects. Therefore, my proble
does not lie in IIS on my Windows 2003 Server. I think it lies in th
Routing/Firewall settings. I have all XP Pro stations' Firewall
turned OFF. The only firewall running on the server is the "Basi
Firewall" in the RRAS configuration. Thoughts now?

Are you saying your server, the one that FTP does work on, has RRAS
installed on it? Is it multihomed (more than one NIC)? Is it the gateway
address of the workstations? If so, I would look at opening ports 20 and 21
in the firewall.

Ace,

Now we're on the same page. Yes, it is a multihomed server, the PDC
the firewall, DHCP, and DNS. The stations do have the "inside" IP NI
listed as it's Gateway. I've tried going into the RRAS portion of th
server, then to NAT/Basic Firewall, then Ports, then turning on "FT
Server" which is Port 21. Even adding Port 20 and enabling it, but m
instinct says that's the wrong move. I think those ports listed ar
for "incoming" connections, not for outgoing. From what I understan
of FTP, clients use Port 21 to go out, but then the communicatio
coming back comes back above ports 1000. I used Etheral and found tha
the connections are sitting in Ports above 3000 on the sever. I've see
some posts that say to re-apply SP2 to the Server and am tempted to tr
that tomorrow. I just know that it's something on the server that'
allowing the stations to make the initial connection, which prompts fo
the username, but when it sends the username, it's alread
disconnected.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Da
