wget and ncftp are very good at this sort of thing, and cron can do the
scheduling.
Why do you care whether it's a gui or not? They are generally much more limited
and buggy programs than the textmode workhorses.
The amount of time it would take you to install and configure and learn
to use such a program could teach you all you need to know about shell
scripting and open up a whole world of control and freedom on Linux.

As for your immediate problem, there are many here and on comp.unix.shell
that will help you with the scripts you need for wget or ncftp (which
has ncftpput and ncftpget which are made for scripting.)
