1. I have a linksys WRT54G Wireless Router
2. I have a DSL connection feeding into the Router
3. I have a Windows 98 PC with ethernet cabling to the Router
4. I have a Windows XP Laptop with Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI
Adapter
5. The laptop and Router are about 2 feet away from each other
6. Signal Strength on the laptop is "excellent"

I can browse the internet on the laptop, however roughly every 30 seconds
the laptop loses connection for a few seconds. Clicking "refresh" in
Internet explorer about 5 or 6 times usually re-establishes the connection.
I cannot download streaming Audio on the laptop due to the frequent
disconnects. Connecting to AOL its impossible to maintain a connection for
more than a minute.

The router is set up with 64 bit WEP, SSID is enabled

I've downloaded the latest firmware for the Router (Version 1.42.2)

I've seen many posts that say to turn off 802.11 authentication. This has
been turned off.

Any thoughts as to things I should try?

Clarence

Sounds like you are having a problem with multipathing. This happens when
the signal bounces off of reflective suraces in the area and phaseshifted
signal confuses the receiver.
You might try moving the base antenna around. Even just a little to get it
in phase with the wavelength. You can also ping the base IP to see if the
signal is really as consistent as you think it is.

I have the same problem with the 1.42.2 firmware. All prior firmwares did
not have this problem.

Gnarlodius:

Thanks for the offer of a helping hand.
I've tried moving the router around to no avail.
As a testament to high geekiness, I even had my router 6 ft high high on a
ceremonial pedestal in the center of the room.
I've tried turning off cell phones and cordless phones again with no effects
on the performance

Heres the results from pinging the router:

Yves: After a long phone call with Linksys technical support, they had me
send back the router.
The new one works wonderfully.
