french characters

i'm trying to copy files accross a win98 network, these
files have french characters in them. They copy to all
but one of the computers. Which just so happens to be the
newly installed one. it has all the updates installed,
and copies all other files. if i rename the files, they
copy. but this is not an option as there are 100's of
files and new ones created all the time.

Any ideas?
