Freeserve broadband - problems?

Hi,

Is there a problem with Freeserve?

I cannot get any connection today - from about 07.00 this morning - although
it was OK very early on - about 04.30.

I am using a Netgear DG814 which appears to have a connection to the
exchange, but the WAN address is shown as 0.0.0.0.

I have tried switching the DG814 off and on but still no joy.

I am sending this via my backup NTL dialup account, and via this have tried
to access www.freeserve.com (also www.freeserve.co.uk and www.freeserve.net)
with no success.

TIA for any replies

Bella.

I might have dozed for an hour or so late morning but WGN radio was
streaming OK for me from midnight through to 10am... did you check
for comments in freeserve.adsl.discuss (which might have a few more
posts if there's a problem other than USB modems :-) Peter M.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for reply.

cis.dfn.de (or whatever it is called now) doesnt carry any Freeserve groups
according to my list, and NTL news doesn't have the group you mentioned,
however it does carry freeserve.help.misc so I will try reposting there.
Without a Freeserve connection I can't use Freeserve's news server.

Thanks again,

Bella.

Bella - I assume you're using ADSL...

Did you get back online ? I took a look late afternoon and saw no other
posts about there being problems so if you're still without service, I'd
guess a call to the 0870 number would be best... 0870 01 02 462 Peter.

Hi Peter

I think that the DG814 has died. Although all lights are normal and the
Netgear screen shows normal down/upload speeds, it
won't connect to Freeserve. It even allowed me to do a firmware upgrade,
(actually a downgrade from 4.9 to 4.7). Re-installing the Alcatel frog has
got me back online, albeit only on one computer.

Thanks for your interest,

Bella.

Bella,

Freeserve had problems for much of today, evidently with authentication
servers, whereby people who had disconnected weren't able to reconnect.
According to the Freeserve Help pages, this only affected people using
routers - so people using USB ADSL modems were okay. (Sounds improbable to
me, but a number of people on ADSLGuide seemed to bear that out.) My router
was unaffected, presumably because it's on 24 hours a day and didn't need to
try to reconnect.

The Freeserve help page is showing a green (rather than amber) light again,
as of about 15 minutes ago; so I assume the problem is fixed now.

I think this means that you shouldn't assume there's anything wrong with
your DG814.

Colin

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the info. My DG814 is on 24/7 - only the computers are turned
off.
I have just reconnected it and it now seems to be working, so it could be
the Freeserve problem you mentioned or, perhaps, it might be that it has had
time to cool down and (temporarily?) rectify whatever the trouble was - only
time will tell.

Thanks again,

Bella.

Handy to have a backup, but by the time you posted, whatever problems
Freeserve had been having (seeing people in Kent, Coventry and East
London have posted on fs.a.discuss) your initial problems may have
coincided with the network failure. I have here a DG814 which died
within a week of installation (on the ADSL/phone side, insofar as it
keeps the line "engaged" and the ADSL modem doesn't work[*]), so I
could not guarantee no problems with your DG814, too. Peter M.
[*] now being used as a 4-port switch and to allow me to see the
user interface, a copy of the working one, elsewhere, I support
